Your Story Matters

From Displacement to Determination

I was born in Kabul around the same time that Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and the war broke out. My family and I had to flee Kabul when I was eleven after the civil war intensified. As a teenage refugee in Iran, I was denied a fundamental right that meant a lot to me: the right to an education. But I refused to let borders, bureaucracy or discriminatory policies define my future.

While I worked hazardous and laborious jobs, obviously with no rights or benefits, to maintain myself and my family, as a child – now I know to be a child labor—I worked hard in whatever time I could spare, to self study. After 13 years spending in survival mode and following the collapse of the Taliban regime, I returned to my country Afghanistan— my heart was filled with determination.

I spent the next 14 years in Afghanistan – not only I managed work in international development with the United Nations and NGOs in Afghanistan to support vulnerable communities, but my lifelong dream of getting educated came true – I received my bachelor’s degree from the American University in Afghanistan before receiving my Masters degree from New York University through Fulbright scholarship. Those years of my life were shaped by resilience, commitment and working hard to not only bring changes to my own life, but to focus on vulnerable people in my community. My professional work as a development and humanitarian worker focused on people: their struggles, their resilience, and their right to safety and dignity.

The turn of the event once again made me to flee my country as the insecurity intensified.

Seven years ago, I arrived in Canada with nothing but hope and an unwavering drive to rebuild. I went through the refugee claim process, navigated the complexities of applying for permanent residency, work permit, family reunification, and citizenship. I know the uncertainty and frustration of the refugee and immigration processes. That’s why my practice isn’t just about legal expertise—it’s about fighting for your future as if it were my own.

A Lifelong Commitment to Justice – Why becoming a lawyer

After coming to Canada, I worked in Ottawa’s settlement sector, helping newcomers as they navigated through their immigration process, securing a job or accessing community services. I kept seeing the same gap with the immigration issues of the newcomers: too many people were lost in the system, unable to afford a lawyer or navigate the process alone. That need inspired me to study law and become an immigration lawyer. This desire was rooted in my past identity as a refugee and created a meaningful bridge to my humanitarian background that was focused on working for the most marginalized and underserved communities.

Giving Back to the Country That Gave Me a Home

Canada offered me a second chance—and I’m committed to paying that forward. Beyond my legal practice, I volunteer with refugee sponsorship groups and local organizations, helping families resettle and access essential services. Because justice isn’t just about winning cases; it’s about ensuring everyone has the chance to belong. When I’m not advocating for clients, you’ll find me reading legal biographies, catching up on policy updates, or watching my favorite soccer club – Real Madrid's game.
